ELASTOSIL RT 628 is a silicone that in electrical engineering combines effective electrical insulation with truly solid mechanical protection. ELASTOSIL RT 628 in electrical engineering – component protection, insulation and mechanical resistance

ELASTOSIL RT 628 is a two-component addition-curing RTV-2 silicone that performs particularly well in electrical engineering as a material for potting and encapsulation of components. Thanks to its flowable consistency and self-levelling properties, it easily fills even complex housing shapes, cavities around electronic components or spaces between windings. After mixing in a 9:1 ratio and curing, it forms a permanently flexible rubber with a Shore A hardness of 54 that combines solid mechanical protection with the elasticity required under the operating conditions of electrical devices.

One of the key advantages of this material in electrical engineering applications is its high tear strength of 12.5 N/mm. In practice, this means that the potted component is well protected against mechanical damage resulting from vibrations, impacts or assembly stresses. At the same time, the elongation at break of 220% allows the silicone to work together with elements that slightly deform under the influence of temperature or dynamic loads. This combination of hardness and elasticity makes ELASTOSIL RT 628 well suited both for the protection of delicate electronic circuits and for the elastic fixation of generator windings, where the material must transfer forces without cracking or detaching from the substrate.

Electrical insulation is another important feature. The cured silicone forms a dielectric barrier, protecting components against short circuits, moisture and contamination. The material shows long-term stability under conditions of fluctuating humidity, UV radiation and temperatures ranging from –50 to +180 °C. As a result, the potted elements can operate in more demanding industrial environments, including hydroelectric installations or equipment exposed to climatic variations, without losing their protective properties.

The application process is convenient for the manufacturer. The mixed material has a viscosity of approximately 40,000 mPa·s, which facilitates dosing and filling of moulds, while the pot life is around one hour at room temperature. Curing takes place at ambient temperature within 24 hours, although it can be significantly accelerated by heating the parts. If required, the reactivity can be further adjusted with suitable additives to match the process to a specific production line.

As a result, ELASTOSIL RT 628 combines the characteristics expected of a modern potting material in electrical engineering: effective electrical insulation, solid mechanical protection resulting from high tear resistance, and elasticity that allows it to perform under stress and temperature changes. It is a versatile solution that works well both for the encapsulation of electronic components and for more demanding applications involving the fixation of elements in generators and power equipment.
