Chemically, AK 350, SILFAR 350 and BELSIL DM 350 are the same type of compound: a linear, non-reactive polydimethylsiloxane with a viscosity of about 350 mm²/s. All are clear, hydrophobic, dielectric and chemically inert. The difference is therefore not a “different silicone”, but intended use, purity, quality control and regulatory status. Wacker states this directly in the AK 350 data sheet: for pharmaceutical applications it recommends the SILFAR® line, and for cosmetics BELSIL®.
WACKER AK 350 is an industrial oil. It is bought to work in a process: as a release agent, lubricant, hydraulic fluid, technical antifoam, water-repellent, dielectric, heat-transfer oil, polish additive, or an auxiliary for plastics and textiles. What matters is viscosity, temperature stability, miscibility with other AK fluids, and price. The technical data sheet does not position it as a pharmaceutical excipient or a cosmetic ingredient.
SILFAR® is the line for pharmaceuticals, food and biotechnology. SILFAR 350 is also a 350 mm²/s PDMS, but it complies with the Dimeticone monograph of the European Pharmacopoeia and the Dimethicone monograph of USP/NF. In the EU it can be used as additive E 900, and the product is handled according to HACCP principles. Typical uses include antiflatulent and antacid preparations, as well as antifoam in fermentation and downstream processes. Wacker excludes parenteral use. Some SILFAR grades, such as S 184, are manufactured to GMP standard as an active substance. Here you are not paying for viscosity alone, but for monograph compliance, purity and batch documentation.
BELSIL® is the personal-care line. The closest viscosity match to AK 350 is usually BELSIL DM 350, declared as Dimethicone. In cosmetics the oil is not only meant to lubricate, but to provide a specific skin feel, spreadability, film formation and repeatability in an emulsion. Added to that are cosmetic documentation, INCI and control of parameters relevant to leave-on and rinse-off formulas. BELSIL is not just ordinary dimethicone either: the family also includes gels, resins and sensory grades that AK 350 cannot replace at all.
That is why these three products are not “the same thing under a different label”. AK 350 sells a performance parameter. SILFAR sells pharmacopoeial and food compliance. BELSIL sells cosmetic quality and sensory effect.
AK 350 is the right choice when the product does not enter the body and is not declared as a cosmetic. It works well for molds, lubrication of plastics and rubber, hydraulics, damping, process and agrochemical antifoam, electrical insulation, heat transfer and industrial polishes. In those applications, a pharma dossier would be an unnecessary cost.
SILFAR is necessary when a customer or a regulation requires an ingredient compliant with Ph. Eur. or USP, E 900 in food, or an antifoam in fermentation with food or pharmaceutical documentation. Similar viscosity is not enough. An auditor asks about the monograph, the batch specification and the intended use — not whether the oil also happens to be 350 mm²/s.
BELSIL is the right choice for creams, serums, sunscreens, makeup, shampoos and conditioners. In cosmetics what matters is formula safety, the INCI declaration and control of impurities relevant to a product applied to skin or hair. Even if AK 350 “behaves similarly” in a beaker, it does not replace a cosmetic ingredient.
The most common mistake is putting cheaper AK 350 into a cream or into “home pharmacy” use because it has the same viscosity. That is not a marketing difference, but a difference in specification, impurity control and legal intended use. The second mistake is confusing this topic with the AK stab, AK visc and AKC lines. Those grades address heat and shear resistance, not drugs or cosmetics.
